Marriott International has finalised its £266 million acquisition of the lifestyle hotel brand CitizenM.

The deal, originally announced in April, followed reports that the Netherlands-based chain’s owners were considering a sale in 2024.

CitizenM’s current portfolio includes 37 operating hotels with nearly 9,000 rooms across more than 20 cities in the United States, Europe, and the Asia Pacific region. These properties are being integrated into Marriott’s systems and platforms.

In addition, CitizenM’s development pipeline—comprising two hotels with over 300 rooms—will also be incorporated into Marriott’s portfolio.

Until the integration is complete later this year, guests can continue to book stays through CitizenM’s existing digital platforms.

Marriott also noted that there are “more details to come” regarding CitizenM’s subscription program once the brand is fully incorporated into the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty scheme.

Anthony Capuano, president and chief executive of Marriott International, said: “As travellers continue to seek innovative lodging offerings that blend technology with genuine, people-first hospitality, the CitizenM brand is the perfect addition to our portfolio.

“Marriott has proven success in growing select-service lifestyle offerings, including our AC, Moxy and Aloft brands, and we look forward to accelerating CitizenM’s global reach with our guests and Marriott Bonvoy members around the world.”

Founded in 2008, CitizenM is known for offering “affordable luxury,” featuring compact, tech-enabled rooms, curated artwork, rooftop bars, and co-working spaces.

The brand made its UK debut in Glasgow in September 2010, launching with room rates starting at £49. Since then, it has expanded in London with four locations, including properties in Shoreditch and near Tower Bridge.
