Amazon to launch UK restaurant food delivery service

Amazon is set to go head-to-head with delivery services such as Deliveroo with a new business named Amazon Restaurants.

Over 180 restaurants have signed up to Amazon’s new service, including pizza chain Strada, the Michelin-starred Indian eatery Benares, and salad chain Tossed.

Amazon promises to deliver meals to 21 London postcodes within an hour, and the service will be free of hidden service fees and menu mark-ups.

Delivery on all orders is free for Prime members with a minimum order of £15. If a customer finds a restaurant item that is priced higher than the regularly-priced item on the restaurant’s current online menu within 24 hours of placing the order, Amazon will refund the customer the price of the item.

Amazon Prime members will be asked to download the Prime Now app and enter their postcode to see if restaurant delivery is available in their area. In postcodes where the restaurant delivery service is available, customers will see Amazon Restaurants on the home page.

London will become the 12th city to offer Amazon’s restaurant delivery service. It was first launched in Seattle in September 2015 and has since expanded across the US to cities including Manhattan and Chicago.
