Green light given for £100m Southampton development

The £100m Bargate Quarter redevelopment has been granted permission by Southampton City Council.

The site, including the former 1980s shopping precinct, is set to be transformed following the decision by members on Southampton City Council Planning Committee.

The proposals include retail units, restaurants, 152 apartments and 451 student beds, as well as an avenue surrounded by substantial public space, enabling the appreciation of the historic Town Walls.

It is anticipated that once fully occupied the residents, students and tourists will generate in excess of £5m of expenditure in the local economy.

The creation of links from the Bargate monument down to Debenhams and from the parks to East Street is another key component of the site’s transformation. These links through the site will attract visitors and seek to boost trade in this area of the City.

Councillor Simon Letts, Leader of Southampton City Council, said, “The granting of consent for the redevelopment of the Bargate Centre signals the start of a new era for this part of the city. The regeneration plans will not only create job opportunities for locals, but the apartments will help to create a vibrant community in the city centre.
