Keep Britain Tidy helps to reduce food waste with annual campaign

Keep Britain Tidy’s annual campaign, Waste Less Live More, is to run from 18 to 24 September.

The charity sends out emails each morning to consumers who wish to take up the seven day challenge, with daily tips to help them reduce food waste, which could save them up to £60 per month.

Keep Britain Tidy ran the seven ‘Waste Less, Lunch Free’ events this summer across seven North London boroughs, in partnership with the North London Waste Authority, to highlight the issue of food waste and how to tackle it in the home.

From curries and salads to pancakes and smoothies, more than 2,500 people lunched well at events this summer. People shared over 5,000 portions of food, all made from ingredients that would otherwise have gone to waste.

As well as enjoying the food, people learnt all about wasting less food in future with live cookery demos, useful tools and top tips. The team of chefs who cooked up the meals were inspired by the North London Food Lovers Cookbook, which is available to download for free and help everyone make the most of their leftovers.

In the UK today, an average family wastes an estimated £700 worth of food that could otherwise have been eaten each year.

Keep Britain Tidy has been working to keep our country clean for nearly 60 years. It was formed by The National Federation of Women’s Institutes. Inspired to take action because of the increasing ‘throwaway culture’ in the post-war boom of the 1950s, they wanted to stamp out the rising problem of litter.
