Newcastle Fat Buddha becomes ski lodge-inspired eatery

Chrysalis Leisure redeveloped the well known Fat Buddha site at Newcastle ’s 55 Degrees North, creating a new restaurant, Antler, which has been inspired by the ski lodges of Austria and Switzerland.

The menu includes schnitzels, sausages and traditional German apple cakes. Bratwurst and bockwurst sausages are served with mustard and frites, and there are pork, veal or chicken schnitzel and gebratener schweinshaxe; roasted pork shank with sauerkraut, gravy and dumplings.

The menu also includes traditional Bavarian ham and cheese fritters and meatballs in beer, while beef lovers can opt for a braised steak roulade with ham, onions and gherkins or sauerbraten – slowly cooked marinated beef served with mashed potato and red cabbage.

The restaurant offers a range of sharing platters with a difference, with food serves up on snowboards. The fleisch teller has sliced continental meats, cheese, bread and pickles, and the Antler ultimate includes curry wurst sausages, Alpine pizza, meatballs, chicken schnitzels, fries and dips.

The venue has an outside Alpine garden, which will be open all year round, with an outdoor pizza oven to create fresh, wood-fired pizzas.

The upper level of the restaurant continuing to serve oriental cuisine under the name, New Buddha.

There are further plans for the venue, which has a regular programme of live entertainment, which include stocking an exclusive brand of Tank Beer and the creation of an in-house bakery.
